Wayne Rooney has told fans not to expect Manchester United to win the Premier League next season.
Manchester United have already confirmed that Michael Carrick will stay on as manager after signing a long-term contract.
United won 12 of their 17 matches under Carrick and finished third in the league, securing qualification for the Champions League.
Despite the improvement, Rooney believes it will still be difficult for the club to compete for major trophies next season.
“We all want them to win the league, but you have to be realistic,” he said.
“Are they going to win the Premier League? Are they going to win the Champions League?
“I think it will be very difficult, but the main thing is to keep improving.”
There is growing optimism at Old Trafford, and the club has been linked with a move for Ederson from Atalanta.
However, Rooney believes fans must remain patient.
The former United captain said the team should focus on steady progress instead of being viewed as immediate title challengers.
Rooney added: “The expectation will always be to try and win every competition, but you also have to be realistic.
“The important thing is for the team to keep improving. If United finish in the top four again next season, compete strongly, maybe win the FA Cup, and perform well in the Champions League, that would still represent progress.”
For Rooney, Manchester United’s priority should be consistent improvement rather than expecting an immediate return to the top of English football.
The club has not won the Premier League title since 2013, and he believes the current level of competition makes a quick comeback unlikely.
