Erik ten Hag has openly expressed his interest in signing former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst for FC Twente as the club prepares for the new Eredivisie season.
However, the Dutch club could face competition from Benfica. The Portuguese side are also interested in signing the experienced forward and may soon make their move.
Weghorst became a free agent after leaving Ajax. During his two seasons at the club, he scored 20 goals and remained an important player in the squad.
According to SoccerNews, Twente are still in a strong position to sign the Netherlands international. However, Benfica could have an advantage because of their greater financial strength.
Speaking during his media duties at the FIFA World Cup, the incoming FC Twente director spoke about Weghorst’s close connection to the club and the region.
He said: “Of course we are interested in Wout Weghorst. He has strong Twente roots, and we are very proud of what he has achieved in his career.
“I have known Wout and his family for many years. Naturally, I would like him to join our team. Every club would want a striker with his quality.
“Right now, his full focus is on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He wants to become a world champion. Will we have to wait? Yes, we will wait.”
FC Twente are expected to wait until Weghorst finishes his World Cup campaign in North America before making further plans for their squad.
Although that Premier League stint yielded only two goals across 31 appearances in all competitions, Ten Hag remains a firm admirer of his tactical profile.
A challenging summer window lies ahead for Erik ten Hag, who faces a tough examination trying to outmanoeuvre Benfica’s financial pulling power to secure his primary attacking target before the 2026-27 domestic season commences.
