Why Live Betting Is Becoming the Main Sports Betting Format

Live betting was once the side menu. Most choices were made before kick-off, and in-play markets mattered far less. That picture looks different in 2026, with several industry datasets now placing live wagering above half of sportsbook activity.

Pre-match events on vippari sit alongside live scores, statistics and changing prices within the same interface. The line between “before the game” and “during the game” has become much thinner.

More betting now happens after the game starts

There is no single figure that covers every U.S. sportsbook, but recent estimates point in the same direction.

Industry tracking in 2026 put live betting at about 53% of U.S. sportsbook handle. Some second-quarter estimates were closer to 57%. In early 2024, comparable figures were around 39%.

A separate study covering nearly 3.8 million sportsbook accounts found that roughly 54% of bets were placed in-play. Estimates from 2022 were generally lower, at about 35–40%.

The NFL works differently

American football still gets a smaller share of its betting activity from live markets than sports such as tennis or basketball.

Even so, an NFL game creates plenty of short windows for new prices. A turnover flips field position. A missed field goal hands over possession. One touchdown can change the score and the shape of the next drive almost immediately.

That leaves room for markets on the next score, passing yards or other player statistics, not just the spread and total posted before kick-off.

One match can offer hundreds of choices

The size of the live menu has changed a lot. One major sportsbook averaged 517 live betting options per game in 2025. In 2022, it averaged 124.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup showed the same shift in another way. Pre-match Bet Builder turnover was 3.6 times its 2022 level. Live Bet Builder turnover was 10 times higher.

Player markets also took a larger share. Shots on target accounted for about 15% of live turnover, while Live Bet Builder went from 3% of in-play bets in 2022 to 22% in 2026.

Live prices do not stay useful for long

A pre-match price can sit on the screen for hours. During a game, a few seconds can be enough to make it obsolete.

Testing during the 2025–26 season recorded median bet acceptance of about 1.4 seconds on leading platforms. The same testing found more than 140 live options during some NFL game windows.

A goal, timeout, injury or penalty can change the situation before the previous price has had time to settle.

The phone fits this kind of betting

Short-lived markets are easier to follow on a device that is already in the user’s hand.

In one 2025–26 sample, more than 87% of live wagers came from mobile devices.

Scores, prices and live markets can all be followed from the same screen. Within that setup, the vippari apk indir page offers another route to live events and changing odds without returning to a desktop interface.

Why live betting keeps taking a bigger share

Several things have changed at the same time:

  • match data reaches pricing systems faster;
  • more sportsbook activity happens on mobile;
  • player props and micro-markets are more common;
  • live combinations cover more events;
  • suspended markets can return quickly.

Pre-match betting is still important. Spreads, totals, futures and outrights all begin there. What has changed is how much of the sportsbook remains active after the game starts.

Live betting is no longer a small extra beside the main product. For a growing share of sportsbook activity, it is the main product once play is underway.
