Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has denied making comments about Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese Football Federation.
The former Portugal boss dismissed remarks circulating on social media, describing them as “fake news”.
Mourinho had reportedly been linked with comments about the growing situation surrounding Ronaldo and the Portugal national team.
However, the Real Madrid manager has now made it clear that he did not speak about the matter.
“Too much fake news about my comments about Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese Federation. I did not make any comment,” Mourinho said.
The denial comes at a time of growing uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo’s future with Portugal.
The captain recently left the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark.
Ronaldo’s departure followed a difficult period involving head coach Jorge Jesus and his role within the team.
The Portugal captain had been left on the bench for the entire 2-1 victory over Norway, prompting questions about his relationship with the new manager.
Jesus later insisted that there were no major issues between himself and Ronaldo.
However, Ronaldo subsequently confirmed that he had decided to leave the national team camp after speaking with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would reveal the reasons behind his decision at a later stage.
The situation has led to widespread speculation about Ronaldo’s international future.
Mourinho’s name was also drawn into the discussion because of his long-standing relationship with Ronaldo.
However, Mourinho has now rejected the comments attributed to him.
His statement means that any remarks circulating online about his views on Ronaldo or the Portuguese federation should not be treated as comments made by the Real Madrid manager.
