FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono could face further disciplinary action following the death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel after a collision during a Spanish second-division match.
The 30-year-old striker died on Tuesday after suffering serious injuries in Monday’s meeting between the two clubs.
The incident happened as De Miguel chased a long ball while Tenerife searched for a late winner.
Owono rushed out of his penalty area to clear the ball but collided with the forward, striking him in the chest with his knee.
De Miguel received medical attention on the pitch for several minutes before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
Owono was shown a red card, and the match was abandoned during stoppage time with the score at 2-2.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital. He was reportedly revived by medical staff, but his condition later deteriorated.
Possible punishment for Owono
Following his death, attention has turned to the possible consequences for Owono.
According to reports, Article 102 of the relevant disciplinary regulations provides for a suspension of between four and 12 matches for violent conduct that causes serious injury or harm to an opponent.
However, the provision does not mean Owono will automatically receive a lengthy ban.
Disciplinary officials must first examine the challenge, the goalkeeper’s actions and the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Any decision will depend on the evidence and whether the incident meets the requirements of the regulation.
Criminal proceedings, if pursued, would be a separate matter from football disciplinary action.
Owono is reportedly deeply affected by De Miguel’s death and has also faced abusive messages on social media.
The tragic outcome alone does not establish that the goalkeeper committed a criminal offence.
For now, the focus remains on the investigation and any formal decisions by the relevant authorities.
No final punishment should be assumed before the available evidence has been assessed.
