Laporta confirms Barcelona’s Alvarez pursuit after Atletico rejection

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club has submitted an offer to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.

The Barcelona chief disclosed that the Argentine international is interested in a switch to Camp Nou, but talks have reached an impasse.

Barca’s interest became official after Laporta revealed that the club had made a direct offer to Atletico during an inauguration event.

His comments came shortly after Alvarez hinted at a desire to leave following Argentina’s victory over Austria.

“I spoke with the people at Atletico and the best thing for everyone is a transfer so I can fulfil my dream.”

Laporta rejected suggestions that Barcelona had influenced Alvarez’s remarks, insisting the player’s comments were entirely his own.

“We have enormous respect for Atletico,” Laporta told reporters.

“The social media posts came before Julian said he wanted to play for a big club, and he never mentioned Barcelona by name.
“Some people assumed he meant us, while others didn’t. We didn’t put him up to it. It was his own decision.
“We’ve admired him since before he joined Manchester City, and even earlier.
“Back then, we weren’t in a financial position to sign him. This time, we’ve made a formal club-to-club offer.”

Laporta speaks on Atleti’s rejection

Laporta believes Atletico are reluctant to sell because they have not identified a suitable replacement for the striker.

“Our understanding is that they are not prepared to sell because they don’t have another option lined up.

“If they do find a replacement, and if our offer is still on the table, we remain interested in completing the deal.

“I’ve seen a number of developments recently, but I don’t really understand the reasoning behind them.

“Atletico’s officials are very experienced, so I can’t say what their strategy is.
“Our proposal is there, and if they decide to accept it, we would be very happy to finalise the transfer.”
