Messi's new position

1 month ago  Raphael   Sport News

Luis Enrique has made an adjustment to Lionel Messi's position in recent weeks, with Barcelona's 3-4-3 system impacting on the Argentine's role within the team.
Over the past few months, the No.10 had always started on the right-hand side of attack, even if he consistently dropped deep to collect the ball, but now Messi has ceded his position on the right flank to Rafinha to become the Blaugrana's most advanced midfielder.
In this fresh formation, the 29-year-old can be found at the attacking tip of the midfield diamond, orchestrating the team as a playmaker just behind centre-forward Luis Suarez.
Having been afforded plenty of positional freedom, he can still drift out to his preferred right flank, but has also been able to shuttle towards the left.
Throughout the Argentine's time at the Camp Nou, he has regularly moved from the flanks to the centre, starting with the right winger position he occupied under Frank Rijkaard, from which he scored his famous goal against Getafe.
Under Pep Guardiola, Messi was often relocated to the middle and into the 'false nine' role, a position from which he was still able to drop into midfield while also able to score over 50 goals per season.
The arrival of orthodox No. 9 Suarez required another round of tactical tweaking and Messi returned to the right as he formed an exciting front three partnership with the Uruguayan in the middle and Neymar on the left.
However, opponents had started to suss this 4-3-3 system out and another change was required, with the 3-4-3 working well so far.
Against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening, it'll become clear just how successful it can be.
