Four years on, the impact of that run shows up in hard numbers rather than sentiment.

At the 2026 World Cup, 10 African teams qualified and nine reached the knockout stage, defying all football betting odds on Premier Bet.

In 2018, none of Africa’s five representatives got past the group stage, managing just three wins from 15 matches between them.

The run that rewrote history

Morocco’s route to the last four included beating Belgium in the group stage, inching past Spain on penalties in the last 16, and edging past Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-final.

France ended the run in the semi-final, winning 2-0, and Morocco finished fourth, still the best World Cup finish by an African nation.

Manager Walid Regragui, who had taken charge only months before the tournament, built the run on a squad drawing heavily on European-based talent, including Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech, and on confidence rather than caution against bigger nations.

A federation that backed the whole set-up

That squad had been shaped by years of domestic investment, not a single lucky generation. The Moroccan football federation had already put money behind facilities such as the Mohamed VI training complex, unmatched elsewhere on the continent, and had backed the women’s game with around $20 million over a four-year period.

That spending paid off beyond the men’s run in Qatar. Morocco’s women reached their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final and qualified for the Women’s World Cup in the same year, evidence the investment reached further than one squad or one tournament.

A blueprint other federations followed

The Confederation of African Football pointed to Morocco’s structure, not just its results, as the model worth copying: sustained spending on youth football, coaching and facilities, rather than a short-term push before a single tournament.

Its leadership argued at the time that galvanising the continent would count for little without concrete, long-term investment from other national federations, not just Morocco’s.

Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong made a similar point in 2026, crediting Morocco’s years of investment in grassroots football and academies as the template other federations have since tried to follow.

Fouad Zahouani is the clearer example of Moroccan youth development.

He spent nine years at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Sale before Union Touarga and a place in the side that won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, and Ajax signed him in June 2026 on a deal to 2029.

Morocco’s academies are now producing players European clubs pay for, which is a different achievement to winning over talent developed elsewhere.

The evidence four years on

The 2026 World Cup gives that theory a scoreboard. Only Tunisia failed to escape their group among Africa’s 10 qualifiers, while Cape Verde, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Morocco and South Africa all finished as runners-up, and Algeria, DR Congo, Ghana and Senegal went through in third place.

Across the tournament, African teams won 10 of 30 matches for 1.33 points per game, comfortably ahead of Asia’s nine teams, who managed three wins from 27 games at 0.67 points per game.

Morocco itself has kept climbing, rising to sixth in the FIFA world rankings, above the Netherlands. Of its 26-man 2026 squad, 21 players were based in Europe and 16 of those at clubs in the continent’s top five leagues.

None of this guarantees an African nation matches or beats Morocco’s run again soon. But the gap between promise and evidence, wide after Qatar, has now narrowed considerably.

Morocco became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final at Qatar 2022.
