UEFA must choose between the two 'Red Bulls'

Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig have both earned Champions League berths through their respective leagues, but UEFA's ownership rules mean that only one of the teams would be permitted to enter the continent's premier competition next season.

European football's governing body forbids teams with the same owner from competing in the same tournament and that means the Red Bull-backed Austrian champions and German runners-up are unlikely to both feature in next year's edition.

"All criteria, including matters of ownership, will be verified for each club by UEFA, who will then proceed with each case if the rules aren't met," the association said on the matter.

There is precedent for entry to continental competition being denied for ownership reasons, with Sparta Prague and AEK Athens both prevented from entering UEFA completion in 1998 as they were both owned by the company Eric.
