Sampaoli: I deserve neither the praise I got before, nor the repudiation I'm getting now

Reiterating that a meeting will go ahead with president Jose Castro to discuss his contract at Sevilla, Jorge Sampaoli has explained how it has felt to be on the receiving end of heavy criticism after receiving plaudits for much of the season.Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sevilla's fixture against Deportivo this Saturday, Sampaoli discussed the negative evaluations of the club's slump in form of late. "I do not think I have always been a person who deserves so much praise, and I do not think today that deserves to be repudiated," said the Argentinian. "We are professionals that are full of dreams and in this world you know that when you win you have praise and when not, you do not."This is how the world and society works, unfortunately."When asked about his future in the Sevilla hotseat, Sampaoli replied as he has done many times before."I have a contract that binds me to the club, it's a contract that has a lot of favourable edges to the club and me, leave or stay," said the former Chile coach. "So I'm meeting with the president, then time will tell. Today I only think about tomorrow's game."After a recent downturn in form that saw Sevilla drop out of the Champions League at the hands of Leicester City, coupled with dropping behind Atletico Madrid into fourth domestically, Sampaoli says that it is crucial his side rediscover the level of performances that drew praise in the first half of the season."It is the intention to return to the best stage of the team so we return to the path of triumph that was almost eight months," he said."We want the team to feel strong again on the pitch and continue fighting for places of privilege."Barcelona were Los Nervionenses latest conquerers after a poor first half performance left too much to do in the second, but there were signs of fight after the restart. "It wasn't good at all [the performance at the Camp Nou], although we had very clear chances," said the 57-year-old."The way the match developed was not what we intended, but there was a great second period and that's how we need to play, we have to resume that courage."Despite a poor run of results, Sevilla are still on course for a top-four finish."For me, the season starts now, we must have the strength in our group," he said."We have the obligation to be up with those teams to get the club to have the rematch in the Champions League next season."What I want is to take the road that has made us competitive against anyone and keep us close to two teams that are historically unattainable."
