Real Madrid star reportedly agrees to extend his contract until 2021

Real Madrid fans celebrate after hearing the news of an agreement reached between Luka Modric and their darling club to extend his contract until June 30, 2021. By doing so, Los Blancos have ensured that the Ballon d'Or winner will remain at the club until the age of 36 and end any rumours about a potential departure in the summer. Despite the fact that there was much talk of Inter's desire to sign Modric, an exit was not something that ever crossed the player's mind. The Croatian joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 under Jose Mourinho, thanks to the personal effort of the coach and the intense and tough negotiations with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. It took him time to adjust to the dynamics of the team but in his second season, he became the shining light for Los Blancos, who have continued betting on him by extending his contract.
The Real reference point: Last season was without doubt the high point for Modric, as he received all kinds of accolades and recognition internationally along with much praise and awards. Almost everything went the way of the Croatian, something that didn't go down well with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. From the Ballon d'Or to FIFA's The Best, UEFA's Best Player award and the star man at the World Cup, all awards went to Modric, who was just a single game away from lifting the World Cup with his country in Russia last summer.
The club's hierarchy have understood what he represents and the importance of Modric for the current Real side and opted to reward him with a new deal. The Croatian is the metronome for Santiago Solari's side, as was evident with their defeat in his absence against Girona. Without him on the field, the team disappeared in the second half and eventually lost the game. The improvement of Real's performance in the last month has also coincided with the appearance of the best Modric of the campaign. Modric's lack of real rest and a pre-season meant that he was far from his best until the final days of 2018, in which he once more began to resemble the prize winner of months before.
Madridista for life: Modric is one of the most important players within the group, both for his character on and off the field of play. Moreover, the club need no reminder of the season in which injuries plagued him throughout and the end result was a trophyless season under Carlo Ancelotti, aside from the Club World Cup. The Italian, in fact, wanted to take him to Bayern Munich with him but the Croatian's absolute priority has always been Real Madrid, who he will remain with for his final years at the elite level.
Modric also fully identifies completely with the team, the club and the city of Madrid. This will also likely be Modric's last contract with Los Blancos, since it will expire at the age of 36, so everything depends on his performances. The dream of both the player and the club is that the player retires as a professional at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
