Cristiano Ronaldo put Real Madrid 2-0 ahead in the final minutes of their semi-final tie against Club America in the Club World Cup, but confusion emerged when the referee, Enrique Caceres, delayed his awarding of the goal.
This lasted for a matter of seconds as Caceres asked for a video consultation before allowing the goal to stand, with the Club World Cup being the first tournament to allow video assistant referees.
However, Caceres opted not to go to the video referee and awarded the goal.
"This is not football," Luka Modric said in relation to the video referees.
"It's what FIFA wants and you have to accept it," added Real Madrid's head coach, Zinedine Zidane.
Roaldo celebrated with his trademark celebration, but the referee's indecision led many to think that the Portuguese attacker was offside when he scored the goal.
Consultation with Caceres ensued and the Paraguayan referee decided to award the goal.
"I do not like that we were standing around for two minutes," Lucas Vazquez stated.
The other semi-final match between Atletico Nacional and Kashima Antlers saw the first ever use of the video referee in FIFA competition as video evidence caught an off-the-ball trip by Orlando Berrio on Daigo Nishi as Kashima Antlers were awarded a penalty.
