MARTIZBURG AND PLATINUM STARS PLAYED GOALESS WITH 10MEN

There could be no separating Maritzburg United and Platinum Stars on Wednesday as their Absa Premiership clash at Harry Gwala Stadium finished goalless, and with both sides down to 10 men. Kurt Lentjies proved a live wire for the Team of Choice in the early stages, twice testing Mbongeni Mzimela in the opening seven minutes, although on both occasions the goalkeeper proved equal to the task. Dikwena came into the game more as the half wore on and twice looked to test Virgil Vries as Henrico Botes and Bongi Ntuli both fashioned shots, although neither were able to find the target with their respective efforts.

Ryan de Jongh then came closer for Stars with a shot that fizzed the wrong side of the post with 33 minutes gone on the clock although neither side were able to find a way through in the opening 45 minutes. A tame start to the second-half saw plenty of fouls and free-kicks break up any rhythm, although Gerald Phiri managed to come close on 59 minutes but saw his shot well saved by Vries. Things then got ugly as both sides found themselves down to 10 men, with Kwanda Mngonyama and Kulegani Madondo tussling after a challenge between the pair, with the referee eventually showing both men red cards.
