Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says no team can yet be called Absa Premiership title favourites

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has played down his side's billing as hot favorite to claim the Absa Premiership title with seven games to go. Amakhosi have built themselves back into the title charge following Wednesday's 2-0 victory against Bloemfontein Celtic, leaping to the second in the standings and just two points off the summit. And Komphela, who is in his second season in charge of Amakhosi, admitted after last night's game that they are now certainly in the mix for title glory but insists the tag of favourites is not something any of the teams at the top can wear. "I wish Chiefs people were not as humble. We would've made a pronouncement [about their title chances] but the humility that we carry we still respect the rest of the opponents," said the coach. "And we say we are still in the race [for the title] but there are still a couple of matches to play, because sometimes early pronouncements are a sign of arrogance and we need to be careful of what you say."

Meanwhile, the former Bafana Bafana captain took many positives from the win over Celtic and felt his side dealt with everything their opponents threw at them. "There was energy in the match and looking at the chances and in both halves; when we got the chance, we took it. Second half as well, we took it," he added. "From the defensive point of view, I felt we defended the box very well. There were very few box entries from Bloemfontein Celtic except the threats that were there with long balls played behind our defense, more especially in our wing-backs; it could've been [Deon] Hotto, it could've been [Kabelo] Mahlasela, even Lyle Lakay...we dealt with that [threat] very well. "But there was a stage where in the second half when we leading 2-0, obviously the opponents will throw everything at you. I felt we could've done better by managing the game, keeping the ball and play," he concluded. Next up for Amakhosi and their title bid is the visit of Chippa United to the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 18h00 kickoff.
