An announcement to postpone the 2020 Olympics has been made today, Tuesday 24th March. The Olympics which was scheduled to commence in Tokyo, Japan on 24 July and run until 9 August, has been postponed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) until 2021.
The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, who spoke via a conference call with the International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach on Tuesday, disclosed that because of the coronavirus pandemic, the IOC and organisers had no choice but to postpone the event.
Until a few days ago, the IOC, the Tokyo organising committee and the Japanese government had insisted that the Olympics would not be delayed it was not due to commence for another four months. But with pressure being mounted on the IOC by several Olympic committees and so many athletes and countries urging a delay, the decision had to be taken.
Countries like Canada and Australia made it clear they would not send athletes to Tokyo, while the British and French governments implored the IOC to consider its stance. The fate of Tokyo 2020 was effectively sealed following these and other developments.
