Four countries join forces to form West Africa Beach Soccer Union

Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Ghana formed a Beach Soccer Union following the conclusion of the 2016 African Beach Soccer Cup of Nations in Lagos. Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal have joined forces to form a new West African Beach Soccer Union [WABSU] with it headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. Vice president of Beach Soccer Worldwide, Joan Cusco alongside head of sponsorship Alex Soriano established the union with the hopes of encouraging the growth of the sport in the region.

At it inaugural meeting, Cusco, who doubles as Fifa Beach soccer committee member, tasks the pioneer countries set out their plans for the development of the sport in the West African sub-region. Nigeria's Suleiman Kwande was appointed as chairman of the WABSU pioneer board with Cote d'Ivoire's Mbahia Yves as vice chairman. Other members of the board are Nigeria's Olajide Taye as Chief Operating officer as well Samson Adamu, founder of Copa Lagos as sponsorship and marketing officer.

Yaw Ankrah of Ghana is the head of media communication and branding, Senegal's Ibrahima Chita is the director of competitions, technical director is Abdullahi Isa of Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire's Akre Benoit is Logistics manager, while Poku Amankwah of Ghana is in charge youth development programme. Speaking on the development, Ankrah who is the president of Ghana Beach soccer expressed delight at the formation of the regional union stating their resolve to advance the sport.

“We are very happy establishing the union in line with our passion for promoting the sport of beach soccer in West Africa," Ankrah told media. "We will have historic impacts both on the future of the African and global game, which is why am calling on football associations, especially in West Africa, to not ignore beach soccer but help in developing it as its future benefits are enormous.”
