Lionel Messi may remain the favourite to win LaLiga's Pichichi award as the top goalscorer in the Spanish top-flight, but he faces a battle with Sporting CP's Bas Dost to claim the European Golden Shoe.
The continental prize has gone to the Pichichi winner in eight of the past nine seasons, but the Dutchman is performing so well in the Portuguese league that he could be the one to inherit the trophy from Luis Suarez, who won it in 2015/16.
Both players have scored 27 league goals - and earned 54 European Golden Shoe points - already this campaign, with the Lisbon forward netting a hat-trick against Boavista last weekend, when Messi drew a blank in Malaga.
Robert Lewandowski is also in the hunt, having netted 26 goals and scored 52 points in action for Bayern Munich.
Edinson Cavani may have scored 29 times in Ligue 1 this season, but goals are worth just 1.5 points in France and he finds himself lower down the leaderboard as a result.
